On finally winning a medal at the World Championships: “The Olympics has been fantastic for us but world championships just haven’t worked for whatever reason,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a formula as to why it’s worked and why it hasn’t. We put in the same effort all the time and Wayne Roycroft, our team coach, and the management team have always worked equally as hard regardless of whether it’s a world championship or Olympic Games. “It’s absolutely wonderful for us to break this jinx.” (EFA 25/8/06)
FLAG BEARING JINX
At the 1996 Olympics he broke the "jinx" that dictates that the flag bearer never wins a medal. He carried the Australian flag at the opening ceremony then went on to win gold in the three day event. (16 Days in Atlanta)
ROYAL CONNECTIONS
He rents a house and stables on Princess Anne's Gatcombe Park Estate in England. Hoy has known Princess Anne since he was 20 when he came under the patronage of her then husband, Captain Mark Phillips. Phillips, the adviser to the US equestrian team, helped Hoy prepare for the 1979 Burghley three-day event in which they were both competing. Hoy defeated his mentor. COUPLE CONFLICTS
He and his wife Bettina are the first husband and wife to have competed against each other at the Olympics, in three day eventing. At the 2004 Olympics in Athens he represented Australia, she Germany. But they insist there is no rivalry when they compete. "It's not like tennis, where your opponent is on the other side of the net. You're competing with the horse against the net, not against each other," he says. (Sydney Morning Herald 13/05/06)
