The American actress Bella Thorne rose to fame after starring on the Disney Channel series “Shake It Up” as CeCe Jones from 2010 to 2013. Since then, she has starred in several blockbusters such as the movies Scream, Midnight Sun, Ride and many more.
Two years ago she revealed to the world on her Twitter account that she was bisexual. But in a recent interview with Good Morning America to promote her new book “Life of a Wannabe Mogul”, she opened up about her sexuality. She isn’t bisexual as she thought two years ago but she is pansexual.
In the live interview she stated, “I’m actually pansexual and I didn’t know that, somebody explained to me really thoroughly what that is.”
After her interview with Good Morning America on July 22, people around the globe were asking themselves that exact question “what is a pansexual?” Well, thankfully, in the interview Thorne expanded on the subject.
“You like beings. You like what you like.” Thorne, 21 revealed “Doesn’t have to be a girl or a guy or a he or a she or they or this or that. It’s literally like you like personality. You just like a being.”
So in layman terms it isn’t abut being homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual because we are all human beings. Someone’s sexuality is based on being attracted to the other person’s personality and not attracted to his or her physical appearance, sexual gender or body.
If we go back to the Greek language, we can understand the root of what pansexual means. “Pan” in Greek means “all”, so pansexual basically means being attracted to all genders, personalities and people. Often this term is used to identify trans genders, non-binary, etc. But the term pansexual means more than just “bi” which means two and “pan” means all.
Millennials and the Gen Z are showing a growing trend in sexuality inclusivity. For example, less than 50% of Gen Z identify as being exclusive heterosexuals. Studies show that pan-sexuality will be an increasing trend in upcoming years, as younger generations embrace inclusivity in every aspect of their lives.
Bella Thorne isn’t the only celebrity to come out as being a pansexual. In 2015, Miley Cyrus in an interview with Elle UK announced that she was a pansexual by stating the following: “I’m very open about it, I’m a pansexual. But I’m not in a relationship. I’m going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I’m with.”
Kesha never labeled herself as being gay, bi or straight because she likes people. Even though she hasn’t officially come out as pansexual, in an interview with Seventeen Magazine she said, “I don’t mean just love, I love people. It’s not about gender. It’s just about the spirit that exudes from the other person you’re with.”
Even though celebrities don’t need to share their sexual preferences with us, but when they do it helps us identify with them. Plus it helps to educate, spark sexual awareness and compassion of the widening sexual inclusivity that we are seeing, especially as in the case of pansexuality.
