If you have ever used a facemask, you know that they come in all types and consistencies. Some might be a thick paste as in a black mask that needs to be applied with a brush; others just seem to drip of your face.
Even though each mask is formulated differently, there are some simple easy to follow guidelines to ensure that your skin will benefit one hundred percent from your facemask.
When pampering your skin with a homemade or a store bought facemask, make sure you stick to this suggestions for maximize results:
When is the best time to apply your facemask?
One of the biggest mistakes we make is applying the facemask before we have a shower. It seems like the logical thing to do, as we can easily wash the mask away, instead of making a mess around your sink.
Why should you wait till after your shower? The warm water and steam during the shower, helps to open your pores and soften the dirt trapped in your pores. When the mask is applied to an after-shower face, it will quickly absorb all of the wholesome ingredients; remove the dead skins cells and other impurities.
What tools should you use?
Most of us apply our masks by smearing it on with our fingers, but our fingers contain natural oils that could change the composition of the mask, making it less effective.
If you plan on applying a facemask regularly to your face, it might be a good idea to invest in a cheap, soft bristle brush for applying your mask.
Using a brush instead of your fingers ensures that most of your mask ends up on your face and not on your clothes or in your hair. It also will apply the mixture more evenly on your face.
This is especially important while applying a black mask, as it has a thicker, stickier consistency. Using a brush will help you reach those hard to get areas such between your eyes and under your nose. Plus, you won’t have to scrub the black paste off your fingers. It washes quickly off your brush by using warm soapy water.
How should you wash it off?
The key to washing your mask off is avoiding leaving it on too long. If your mask dries out too much, it can almost be impossible to rinse off. Plus, the active ingredients might become too active, which could damage your delicate facial skin.
Wash your face off when it recommended by using lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water as it will dry out your skin and cold water will be inefficient at breaking down your dried out mask.
If you used a peel-off black mask, it is important that you follow the instructions for leaving it on your face. Normally for 20 to 30 minutes let dry on your face, and then begin to peel off carefully, as it can be slightly painful since it is extracting all the blackheads and other impurities in your pores. If there are still black patches that won’t peel away, rinse with lukewarm water.
What should you do after the mask?
After removing the mask, it is important to apply a toner to your skin to lock in all of the benefits of your facemask. This will also help your skin to absorb the moisturizer that you will apply after the toner. First, add your toner and then your moisturizer, this will leave your skin looking smoother, softer and younger.
